A Letter from Dr. Caroline Gomez
July 6th, 2007Dear MCASG Members:
Serving children with autism is complex and necessitates expertise from a variety of disciplines and community organizations. Fortunately, with the established and future MCASG partnerships there is much to look forward to including increased availability of diagnostic services, model educational programs, respite care, and more.
Of great concern is the latest CDC study reporting that on average Georgia parents of children with autism note concerns over their children's development before they are 2 years of age. However, the average age that Georgia children are receiving a diagnosis is almost 5 years of age. We must change this reality as we know that evidence gained over the last 10 years supports the critical role of intensive, early intervention for children with autism.
Unfortunately, the number of qualified professionals to serve children with autism has not kept pace with increased prevalence rates. Model educational programs can address this critical shortage and more by providing (a) research-based services to children with autism, (b) invaluable experiences to college and university students as they prepare for careers serving children with autism and, (c) observation and training sites for parents and professionals. A number of other services and programs are also on the horizon and hold great promise.
Families should expect and receive the services that lead to promising futures for their children, with no waiting. Every day counts. It arrives with its challenges and opportunities for your children. With continued resolve, each day reveals growth and learning, one good day at a time.
I am inspired by each of you as you collect your blessings daily and then regain your momentum in an effort to help your children. Your efforts also help to bring the MCASG vision closer to full fruition. No doubt, the MCASG will increasingly be viewed as a beacon of hope in response to this world-wide epidemic. Imagine the day when we can offer immediate help to families and hang a sign at the MCASG Autism Center that reads, "No Waiting."
Best Wishes,
Caroline R. Gomez, Ph.D.
